Why hire a TENS?

How does a TEN's machine work and how does it help?

A TENS Machine is a Transcutaneous Electrical Muscle Simulator, which provides pain relief by sending a mild electrical current through your muscles.

This stimulation of the skin and muscles underneath the pads (on the back), actually confuses and overstimulates the nervous system as it can only focus on one form of information at a time.

This can lead to less pain signals actually getting to the brain, therefore you perceive less pain.

You can look up the 'The Gate Control Theory of Pain' to get more in depth information about how that works.

The reason so many women also love the TENS machine is because it can offer a distraction from the contractions and it also helps to release endorphins (your happy hormones).

What features does the machine have?

On top of the constant electrical stimulation through the pads that you have full control over, the BOOST button is an absolute game changer.

You can use the BOOST button on the side of the machine when you feel a contraction coming up to really increase the stimulation of the machine to help override the pain and sensation of the contraction.

This button is really easy for you to control and you can push it on and off yourself when needed.

Built into the machine also is a contraction timer. This essentially counts in the time in between the contraction and the duration of the contraction from when you are turning on and off the boost button.

This is super helpful especially if you are using this at home before you go to the hospital or at home for your homebirth before your midwives come so you can know how often your contractions are coming and lasting for!

What does it feel like?

The TENS Machine can feel like a tingling/vibrating/buzzing feeling on the skin/muscles where the pads are placed.

As soon as you turn the machine off, those sensations are gone.

How do I set it up when I'm in labour? And when do I put it on?

You will receive everything you need in your pack to use your machine when the time is right.

I do recommend you getting it out and familiar with the machine before you go into labour so you and your partner/friend/family feel comfortable using the machine.

Simply open up the back of the machine and put the 2x AA batteries inside.

Attach the lanyard so you can easily place it around your neck in labour.

You can then plug in the cables and then attach the Pad Electrodes into the cables.

Then turn the machine on.

What are some other advantages to using the TENS?

  • It is safe to be used with other forms of pain relief if you choose
  • You can move around with the TENS machine on your back (movement if possible throughout labour is very beneficial for baby's positioning)
  • There are no side effects from using a TENS machine for you or your baby
  • It can be used from the beginning of contractions starting
  • There is a BOOST button to press to give you more relief as a contraction is starting or peaking
  • You are fully in control of the use of the machine

What are some disadvantages of using the TENS? And when shouldn't I use it?

  • You cannot use the TENS machine if you are in the water- shower or birth pool
  • It may be a bit difficult to put it on by yourself
  • Do not use this machine if you have any heart issues or a pace maker

How does the ordering system work and what is included?

We have a 4 or 8 week hire selection.

It is great to have your TENS machine ready at your house at around 36 weeks.

The first date you select is the date that it will roughly arrive so you can base it from that date around your estimated due date.

Once you have used your machine, you will be able to send your machine back with the reply sticker you received in the bag.

You can simply send back the machine, lanyard and cables back in the back at your local post office!

The hiring process

Hire & date selection

We currently offer a 4 or 8 week hire period.

You can simply select which hire period you would prefer and then select the arrival date (the day if not very close to the day that your machine will arrive), this will then automatically create the return date for your machine either the 4 week or 8 weeks later.

For orders received by 12pm, we dispatch the same day in order for you to get your machine as quickly as possible, if you are worried about postage, please select express shipping at the checkout.

4 week hire
This is for you if you're not too worried about having your machine, you can aim to have this arrive at about 38 weeks and will then cover you for the remainder of your pregnancy or this option is for you if you have maybe found us a bit later and you are a bit further along and would like it as soon as you can.

Please ensure though to keep in mind the 4 week time period, if for whatever reason you need to extend this time, please get in touch with us ASAP to see if that can be arranged depending on availability and for an extra cost.

8 week hire
This is for you if you would like the extra reassurance of having the machine ready to go, we suggest that you arrange to have this arrive at around 36 weeks and then you will be in less of a rush to have it back to us by your return date.

Using the machine

The package you receive will include everything that you will need to use your machine including 2x AA batteries, instructions and even a extra little gift.

Simply open the back of the machine and place the batteries provided inside, plug in the leads, then attach the pad electrode into the leads, peel and place the pads onto your back and turn on.

I do suggest that you get familiar with the machine before you use it so it's one less thing you have to worry about in the lead up to your labour & birth.

Returning the machine

Please ensure that the machine is returned by the end of your hire period to ensure a smooth process getting it to its next temporary home.

In your package, you will have received a return postage sticker so when you are ready to send it back, please include the machine, lanyard and leads.

Remember to keep the postage bag it came in to save you from buying another one, simply put the machine and accessories in the bag, stick on the return label and drop it to your local post office.
